sam is the author of a memoir entitled the girl: a life in the shadow of roman polanski. yep, she’s that girl. though she’s fifty now, sam will always be known with an asterisk next to her name, and her name will always be spoken of in conjunction with that of polanski. in 1977 when sam was just thirteen years old and a hopeful aspiring model and actress, polanski picked her up from her parents house and drove her to jack nicholson’s place under the pretense of wanting to photograph her for french vogue. there he gave her quaaludes and champagne, photographed her, got her into the hot tub and ultimately raped her. when pressed she sometimes almost casually dismissed the whole thing, saying “it was the 70s, it was a different time”. writing the book, i think, was her attempt to take control of the thing that has always defined her, and by telling her story so forthrightly, perhaps go some way toward making it her own.
